The Internet of Things — Challenges, Opportunities and Business Value in Nigeria

T
he Internet of Things (IoT) has gone from being a buzzword to a concept we see in our everyday lives. Phones have a variety of sensors that gather large amount of data.

Houses, cars, machines are smarter than what they used to be. In many businesses today IoT is described as ‘’the next battlefield’’. It is shifting from being a technology to a key enabler of digital transformation.
What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?
IoT is a system involving connected devices that gather data, connect with the internet or local network, generate analytics and adopt behaviour based on the analytics in the network. An IoT system is made up of sensors, networks and analytics. IoT is able to and will bring numerous benefits to businesses in the coming years.
The importance of this concept is being accepted by individuals and businesses; there exists obstacles to IoT adoption which have kept adoption slow in Africa and very slow in Nigeria. With detailed planning and right partnerships, awareness and clear understanding of project outcomes, none of these challenges can’t be overcome.
Challenges in IoT adoption in Nigeria
1. Culture: Traditional thinking and methods remain the biggest challenge in IoT adoption in Nigeria. Resistance to change and new technology is the norm. According to Mckinsey’s survey of global executives, three digital-culture deficiencies are common: functional and departmental silos, a fear of taking risks, and difficulty forming and acting on a single view of the customer. Awareness, government policies can help change it. Thanks to the G7 and EU for the Emerging Africa Leaders program helping create awareness and spur transition to the next production revolution.
2. Legacy Machines: ‘’if it is not broken, don’t fix it’’ is the norm with the industrial sector. Equipment are maintained and used for many years. These equipment remain a major part of the industrial environment because replacing them would cost millions of Naira, an expense companies find hard to justify when existing machine works perfectly. Legacy machines sometimes prove difficult working with new technologies. However, a strong IoT partner will see to interoperability of these machines.
3. Connectivity: Wired connectivity is not strange to the industrial environment, so with IoT on wireless connectivity this may be a change in the network infrastructure design. The use of wireless networking may raise security concerns.
4. Financing: Financing is very important as IoT is relatively a financial heavy project. Presenting theoretical cases which are not yet implemented in the facility and convincing management for funding is challenging. It is imperative to consider not only the upfront investments but also the longer term cost requirements of managing, maintaining and expanding. We advocate clear outcomes for projects and the business unit deploying the IoT project be responsible for not less than 70% of the funds required.
5. Skills: Having the right human resource is the most important for any project to be successful. Questions like ‘’who will make it happen?’’ The skills for an IoT project according to IBM ranges from system architects with a detailed knowledge of the operating and business environments, systems integration specialists who are able to facilitate the implementation of hardware into the business environment, the back end engineers and the data analysts and scientist.
6. Vendors and Partnerships: Having the right vendor/partner is very important for any IoT deployment and for scale. This is because the right vendor provides the most suitable platform for an IoT project. Partnerships cut across the hardware, software and telecommunication companies through to engineering and industrial companies.
7. Security: IoT security concerns any device, system or part of the IoT process flow where data is stored, transmitted and analyzed. Equipment is hackable if the network can be accessed, this affects the production process.
Opportunities and benefits in IoT
The asset rich industries such as the oil and gas stand to benefit more from the opportunities Industrial Internet of Things presents us with. A number of critical assets can be remotely monitored and many manual processes automated. These businesses can leverage on a twin to predict how an asset will behave thus preventing downtime.
1. Automation: IoT presents a direct replacement of manual processes. Factory and production floor need not to be monitored via pen and paper. Machines equipped with sensors are able to gather data in real time and perform monitoring with higher accuracy and efficiency.
2. Predictive Maintenance: The reality in business environment is that machine fail. When they do, they don’t just impact the present work but also the future. Being able to monitor equipment to prevent them from failing saves the business time and money. Materials do not get spoiled and secondary damage avoided.
3. Higher Outputs: Predictive maintenance helps manufacturers produce goods with higher quality, being able to reduce the number of spoiled finished goods, the yield increases as a result of increase in production line efficiency.
4. Digital Twins: This is a benefit I find most interesting. Digital twins allow the modeling of a physical asset but without any risk to the physical asset. Being able to perform all types of test on virtual machine is a very strong benefit. It will save time, money for any project.
5. Asset Tracking: Being able to track the location and expected arrival of materials in the supply chain is a very useful application of IoT. This will help enterprises in their planning, gives them greater knowledge and control of supply chain, enables them pro act to potential problems that may occur in logistics.
Value of IoT
Analytics is becoming a mainstream in IoT projects. Before now, much focus was on the hardware and connectivity. This is fast changing. An Analytics solution is an Integral part of an IoT project.
Data harnessed from connected processes are analyzed, interpreted and used to drive operations and strategic decisions. Data driven decisions are key to make any meaningful business outcome.
An efficient analytics platform turns data into useful insights that reveal hidden information, opportunities and possible area for change and improvement.

Fortnite's next big in-game event announced, pray for cube death

Finally. Finally, Fortnite's cube might actually show us what's inside. Epic just announced that players should try to get in a match on November 4 at 1 pm ET to see the end of Fortnitemares and the beginning of whatever comes next. A few similar in-game events have marked the gradual transition between seasons, the most memorable of which was a live rocket launch that busted a hole in the space-time continuum. Yeah, Fortnite is getting difficult to describe.
I'm speculating, though I'd be surprised if Kevin the Cube didn't explode and scatter itself all over the map this upcoming Sunday, when the event and the end of Fortnitemares are scheduled to take place.
A recap of cube bullshit:
  • Cube is summoned by lightning
  • Cube moves all around map, printing runes
  • Cube melts into Loot Lake
  • Cube lifts house at center of lake, becomes floating island
  • Cube island visits all the runes, juicing 'em up
  • Cube island heads back to Loot Lake
  • Runes float to Cube Island
  • Cube Island sucks juice outta runes
  • Cube island explodes
  • ???
  • Zombies!
While I'm tired of cube stuff, I'm glad zombies weren't the cube's final trick. Players have had mixed reactions to the addition of cube monsters, and while I think any naysayers are cowards, the probable departure of the groaning purple jerks with the Fortnitemares event will be welcome, so long as Epic plants a flag and changes or adds something else surprising. A quick glance at Twitter or the subreddit reaffirms that Kevin's time is up. Most Fortnite players can all agree that while the cube began as captivating mystery, its multiple treks across the map in various forms have grown tired. The cube's getting tired too, it appears, with cracks appearing all over the surface since Fortnitemares began. Sunday will most likely see the end of the cube era and kick off the lead up to the seventh season. Time flies when a cube does stuff forever.
You can bet I'll be there to see it all go down, either via a livestream or recap with a video after Kevin eats it, assuming Kevin eats it. Please eat it, Kevin.

Smartphone shipments into Africa surpasses 20 million during Q2 of 2018

A
ccording to the latest insights from International Data Corporation (IDC), a total of 22.4 million smartphones were shipped in Africa during the second quarter of 2018, thanks to the growing popularity of low-end to mid-range devices.

The global technology research and consulting firm’s Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker released on September 18 showed that Africa’s smartphone shipments increased 9.8% quarter on quarter (QoQ) and 6.0% year on year (YoY) in Q2 2018.
Tecno and co leading the African smartphone race
Chinese-based Transsion brands — Tecno, Itel, Infinix and Spice — continued to lead the continent’s smartphone race in Q2 2018, accounting for 35.4% of shipments, while Samsung followed in second place with 23.2% market share.
By contrast, the feature phone market was down 1.1% QoQ and 5.8% YoY in Q2 2018, but — with shipments totaling 31.4 million units — these devices still constitute a 58.3% share of Africa’s overall mobile phone market as they cater to the needs of the continent’s huge low-income population (mainly in rural areas) by providing basic mobile communications that are priced very competitively.
Telco and Itel continued to lead feature phone category in Q2 2018 with a combined unit share of 59.9%, followed in third place by HMD on 9.0%. According to the IDC report, Africa’s combined mobile phone market totalled 53.8 million units in Q2 2018, with shipments up 3.2% QoQ but down 1.2% YoY.
Nigeria and South Africa markets show steady growth
The continent’s two biggest markets — Nigeria and South Africa — saw a marked improvement in the performance of their overall mobile phone markets, posting YoY growth of 13.0% and 25.0%, respectively, reports IDC.
“[Nigeria] saw smartphone shipments of 2.7 million units in Q2 2018, up 15.8% YoY, with strong marketing support from telecom operators for most brands proving instrumental,” says Arnold Ponela, a research analyst at IDC, adding the country’s “ongoing currency issues and falling consumer purchasing power” suggest that it may not be ready for a sustained surge in smartphone shipments.
On the other hand, South Africa remains the continent’s most developed telecommunications market, with smartphone shipments up 17.4% YoY in Q2 2018 to total 3.4 million units, according to the report.
“Numerous new entrants to the South African market are now offering affordable smartphones that boast very similar features to the leading brands,” says Ponela. “As such, we expect the country’s migration away from feature phones to continue at a progressive pace. This transition from feature phones to smartphones is reflected by the fact that the market continues to be dominated by low-end to mid-range devices priced below $150.”
4G LTE networks on the rise
IDC’s research shows that 4G LTE networks are spreading their reach in Africa, with shipments of 4G LTE devices increasing 11.8% QoQ in Q2 2018 to constitute 62.6% of the smartphone market.
“Despite a drop in the prices of entry-level 4G phones, 2G and 3G mobile devices remain far more economical, making it difficult for operators to migrate clients over to newer technologies,” says Ramazan Yavuz, a research manager at IDC.
“Price sensitivity means that many African consumers prefer to stick with 3G phones, and this is likely to continue until 4G devices fall to a price point where they are affordable to a much larger segment of the continent’s consumer base,” he added.
Based on forecasts, IDC expects Africa’s overall mobile phone market to grow 2.6% QoQ in Q3 2018, with overall shipments to increase slightly through 2018, leading to YoY growth of 0.4% for the year as a whole.
“IDC predicts that 5G phones will reach the market in 2020, when rollouts of 5G networks will start in select African countries,” says Yavuz. “However, demand for feature phones is unlikely to be impacted significantly as these devices will continue to serve a purpose in areas with no LTE coverage.”

Best phone 2018

Samsung Galaxy S9

Samsung’s best phone with a big screen and superb camera
Weight: 189g | Dimensions: 158.1 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm | OS: Android 8 | Screen size: 6.2-inch | Resolution: 1440 x 2960 | CPU: Snapdragon 845 / Exynos 9810 | RAM: 6GB | Storage: 64GB/128GB | Battery: 3,500mAh | Rear camera: Dual 12MP | Front camera: 8MP
Excellent low-light cameras
Super premium build
AR Emoji mode is overrated
Not all that different to S8 Plus
Samsung is making a big deal about the camera on the S9 range and for good reason, on the back of the S9 Plus are dual 12MP cameras, both with an impressive f/1.5 maximum aperture. At the time of writing the S9 range is the only phone with a camera aperture this wide, making its low-light prowess second-to-none.
Add on top of that the 'infinity' screen that the Samsung Galaxy range is now famous for, and this big-screened beauty comfortably takes the top spot. We thought the AR Emoji feature was overrated, but if you're in the market for the best screen and best camera on a phone, this is the handset for you.

Best TV 2018

The best TV ever? Could be!
After an underwhelming debut, Samsung’s QLED technology really needed to bounce back in style in 2018. It didn't surprise us in the least, then, to discover Samsung threw the kitchen sink in with its new Q9FN QLED Series of TVs.
As well as being even brighter and more colorful than last year’s equivalent model, Samsung's 2018 flagship screens use a completely different lighting system to combat its predecessor’s contrast problems: Full Array Local Dimming rather than edge-lit LED lighting. The FALD panel works in tandem with Samsung QLED Quantum Dots to produce a picture that's brighter and more colorful than near any we've seen come from the South Korean manufacturer.
Do those features alone make Samsung Q9FN the best TV on the market? No, but throw in technology like HDR10+ and Q HDR EliteMax – what Samsung bills as its maximum High Dynamic Range experience that’s exclusive to the Q9FN – and there's very little doubt in our mind that this is Samsung's best TV ever.

Facebook hires former deputy PM Sir Nick Clegg

Facebook has hired former deputy prime minister Sir Nick Clegg as head of its global affairs and communications team.

The 51-year-old politician was leader of the Liberal Democrats and formed a coalition government with David Cameron and the Conservatives in 2010.
Facebook has faced intense scrutiny and the threat of government regulation following the Cambridge Analytica data scandal and alleged election meddling.
Several prominent executives have left the company in the last year.
Sir Nick's new job title will be vice-president of global affairs and communications at Facebook.
He will start work on Monday and will spend a week at the company's Menlo Park headquarters, before moving to California permanently in the new year.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg were personally involved in the recruitment, the Financial Times reported.
In a statement, Sir Nick said he was delighted to join the company.
"Having spoken at length to Mark and Sheryl over the last few months, I have been struck by their recognition that the company is on a journey which brings new responsibilities not only to the users of Facebook's apps but to society at large. I hope I will be able to play a role in helping to navigate that journey," he wrote.

A rough year for Facebook:

Sir Nick has previously written about Facebook for a number of UK newspapers.
In 2016, he wrote in the Evening Standard: "I'm not especially bedazzled by Facebook. While I have good friends who work at the company, I actually find the messianic Californian new-worldy-touchy-feely culture of Facebook a little grating."

What does Facebook want Sir Nick for?

Analysis by Chris Fox, BBC technology reporter
Facebook has had a turbulent few years and is trying to get a grip on its policies and reputation.
The Cambridge Analytica data scandal revealed that the personal information of millions of people had been misused, potentially influencing the results of elections.
The company has also removed "billions" of fake accounts, linked to the spread of fake news and disinformation, possibly connected to countries such as Russia and Iran.
Facebook hopes Sir Nick will challenge the company on its issues.
With his political experience as part of the UK government, and as a former MEP, he will also be well-placed to advise how to keep the regulators away.
In a Facebook post, Sheryl Sandberg said the company needed "new perspectives to help us though this time of change".
Sir Nick is not the first Liberal Democrat to take a senior role at Facebook. Lord Allan of Hallam is currently the company's public policy chief for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Who is Sir Nick Clegg?

Nick Clegg was a Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam from 2005 until 2017.
In 2010, when he was leader of the Liberal Democrats, he became deputy prime minister in a coalition government with the Conservatives.
But he faced a backlash from his supporters when he broke a promise that he would vote against any rise in university tuition fees.
The Liberal Democrats lost a majority of their seats in the 2015 general election, ending up with just eight MPs, down from 57.
Although he had kept his own seat, Nick Clegg resigned as the party leader.
He lost his seat in the snap general election of 2017, but was given a knighthood in January 2018.
In his statement announcing his new job at Facebook, he said it was "wrenching" to "leave the public debate at a crucial time in the Brexit process".
"But the key decisions will soon pass to Parliament, of which I am no longer a member, and once I had decided to take up this unique new challenge at Facebook, I felt it was best to get going sooner rather than later," he said.
Jon Trickett MP, Labour's shadow minister for the cabinet office, said Sir Nick's new job was "a damning indictment of the sorry state of our country's politics".
"At a time when digital giants such as Facebook are rightly coming under public scrutiny, our former deputy prime minister has been hired to lobby on their behalf."

Analysis

by Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC technology correspondent
In the UK, the reaction has been "What?" while in the United States and elsewhere most people will say "Who?" - so why has Facebook decided that Sir Nick Clegg is the right fit for one of the most challenging - and best paid - jobs in communications?
From the moment in the summer that Sir Nick's predecessor, Elliot Schrage, announced he was leaving, Facebook made clear that it was not going to look inside or to other seasoned PR professionals for his replacement.
Instead, bruised and blinking in the spotlight after a catalogue of scandals tarnished its image, it wanted someone who could guide it through choppy political waters in Washington, Brussels and elsewhere.
Given how partisan US politics have become, choosing an American politician would have brought allegations of bias.
In the UK, Sir Nick may be a divisive figure - especially over Brexit - but elsewhere that will not be such an issue. Facebook will hope that someone who has survived - just about - the cauldron of British politics will not flinch under fire from US senators or EU regulators.
Sir Nick may find he needs to challenge Mark Zuckerberg pretty frequently. Just how well he handles his relationship with his new boss deals will be crucial. If he succeeds he could wield more power than he ever did in politics.
If the relationship sours he will be heading home from California pretty quickly.
